OSS TROTTING FILLIES IN DRESDEN ON FRIDAY

Dresden Raceway’s history is like that of many other small tracks throughout Canada.

Racing began over 140 years ago when men would race their horses for bragging rights after church. It turned into an afternoon of festivities for the families as the children would play between dashes while the wives would enjoy some “girl time” with each other. When the races started they would cheer for their favourites.

Things became more organized at Dresden Raceway when a group of men including Jack Martin, George Deacon and a group of others got together to build the track where it stands.

The original grandstand was on the south side of the track exactly opposite of where the grandstand sits now. In 1976 the Dresden Agricultural Society held the grand opening for a new grandstand on the north side of the track where it still stands.

In the 1980's the track was vibrant, racing four nights per week with handles that would hit between $80,000-$100,000 on average nights but climb to $100,000-$120,000 on good nights.

Some of the best drivers of all time like Levi "Jiggs" McFadden, Shelley Goodreau, John Campbell, Dave Wall and Kevin Wallis all raced regularly at Dresden Raceway.

McFadden headlined a group of legends that raced at Dresden that included Wilf Duford, Elwin Dell and Dunc Campbell.

Top trainers like Bob McIntosh would often bring their two-year-olds to the track for their first races and it would be a site to behold as six or seven of the McIntosh entries would be in each of the schooling races and the maiden races.

Camluck, Fundamenalist, Mystery Fund, and Bond Street are just a few of his offerings that got their first start at Dresden Raceway.

Other great horses got their start at the local oval as well, including Apaches Fame and A Worthy Lad who was halter broke by trainer Mark Austin who was stabled at the track.

Interestingly enough, A Worthy Lad tied Cam Fella's record of 28 straight victories at Dresden Raceway.

There were many great overnight horses that raced at Dresden Raceway as well including Dave Wall's Pro Fighter and others like Davey Lee, Dapper Duke Dee and Mr Peter Ray.

Dresden Raceway was operated by Windsor Raceway for many years through the 1990's and into the new millenium but is now back into the hands of the Dresden Ag Society.

The track has a five-year deal with Ontario Lottery and gaming to operate through 2021.

MAGNUM SEELSTER was second for Tyler Borth while ON GOLDEN PONDER and Donnie Rankin paid the show price.

Moore and Brad Forward had the hot hands of the day as they each chalked up three winners. Moore hit the winner’s circle with P J LUCKY LASS, CAT FOUR and BIG IS BETTER while Forward’s winners included FORTUNE NEW MOON, LADY WITH A WEAPON and BIG DIVA.

REAGAL BEAGLE WINS LITTLE GREEN JUG

WINDSONG KANGO VICTORY

DRESDEN (June 19, malady 2016) – Tyler Borth and Andy Moore were tied for the dash lead going into racing action today at Dresden Raceway. Not anymore. Tyler Borth proved that the 33 degree temperatures weren’t the hottest thing at Ontario’s Little Saratoga as he was at the controls for five winners on the afternoon at Dresden Raceway.

The Ingersoll tailsitter scored his first win with MAGNUM SEELSTER in the third race for owner/trainer Doug Currie of Brigden. The 11-year-old Intrepid Seelster gelding battled HOWDY PARTNER and Brad Forward down the lane for a win in 1:59.2.

BOONDOCK was the next win for Borth in the fourth race in 2:02.1. Borth is the condition and co-owner of the four-year-old Majestic Son gelding with Martin Hossack.

The 24-year-old driver rolled with DEX THE LAND in the fifth race to make it three wins in a row for owners Jim Napper and Peter Verstraete of Bothwell and trainer Cathy Gaudreau. The three-year-old Badlands Hanover filly went wire to wire in 2:01.2.

WINDSONG KANGO was Borth’s fourth trip to the winner’s circle in the seventh race as he came from off the pace with the five-year-old WIndsong Cruiser filly in 2:01 flat. WINDSONG KANGO is owned and trained by Diana McIntosh of Strathroy.

Borth wrapped up the Father’s Day card of racing by winning his fifth with the nine-year-old Thatll Be Me mare, search KELLY RAE in 1:59.2. KELLY RAE is owned by John and Sandra Lester of Lambton Shores and trained by co-owner John C. Lester.

Borth now leads the driver’s standings with 11 wins while Moore is second with seven while Alex Lilley and Brad Forward are tied for third with four wins each.

Donnie Rankin Jr. won two races on the day for a driving double.

The on track live handle at Dresden Raceway was $17,955.

CAT FOUR CRUISES TO DRESDEN RACEWAY CUP WIN

Dresden Raceway Cup Winner's Circle

DRESDEN (June 12, 2016) – CAT FOUR didn’t need nine lives Sunday as the 12-year-old Camotion gelding was the winner of the inaugural “Little Saratoga” Dresden Raceway Cup. Andy Moore went right to the front and cut out fractions of 28.4, 58, 1:28 and 1:58.2 with CAT FOUR who was claimed out of the race going back to Jim Watt’s stable for owner Alisha Williams.

The big bay gelding was claimed last week in Hanover by Derek Latour of Sarnia and raced out of Lloyd Mansfield’s stable today.

The Little Saratoga Dresden Raceway Cup is dubbed the “working horse’s race”. “We decided that regular overnight horses work just as hard and sometimes have more to overcome than some of the star horses that race in the big races like the North American Cup or the Little Brown Jug so we presented a trophy for a regular blue collar horse” explained Track announcer and PR man Gary Patterson.

Almost 720 people bet $19,751 on the picturesque day at the track.
