June 3, 2016 (DRESDEN) When it comes to being a good guy Mark Williams has the market cornered in the harness racing world. Whether it's getting a push behind a sick child or giving a whip away after a win, Williams is one of those few guys who shoot straight from the heart.
If Williams gave a whip away for every win in his career it might be pretty expensive as he is closing in on win number 5,000. The Cottam, Ontario, horseman has chalked up 4,983 victories and should be hitting the milestone win in the next couple of weeks.
Williams who started his driving career 40 years ago in London has carried a UDRS of .247 and has amassed almost $22 Million in purses.
Williams, who chalked up most of his wins at Windsor Raceway and Hazel Park Raceway in Detroit as well as Dresden Raceway and Leamington Raceway, is known for being one of the nice guys in the sport who always has a great story to tell. The reinsman picked up the trade from his legendary father Stan Williams is down for five drives Sunday at Dresden Raceway.
The veteran horseman has also been a vocal supporter of horseman's rights as a former director of OHHA as well as being one of the driving forces behind Lakeshore Raceway in Leamington.
